Cases of dengue reported in Queensland

Two locally transmitted cases of dengue fever were confirmed in northern Queensland. Queensland Health has confirmed two people have acquired the disease at Mossman, near Port Douglas.

The most recent outbreak of dengue in the region was when 498 people were infected in a case in the whole region of Cairns, between 1997 and 1999 Dr. Scott Ritchie of the Queensland Health says that the case should remind residents to get rid of the breeding sites of mosquitoes around their homes.

Residents are encouraged to get rid of their homes buckets, pot plants and blocked gutters that collect water, and using mosquito repellents and sprays.

People who have symptoms of dengue fever are urged to consult a doctor immediately. Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes and found in tropical regions around the world. There is no medical cure and no vaccine.

The severe form of the disease, dengue haemorrhagic fever can be fatal, especially among young children. Symptoms of dengue fever, headache, rash, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea and fatigue.
